From the book: A life changing happening can come in many guises. Sometimes it is the result of deliberate application in some direction but more often than not it is chance. In my case my move from Devon to Africa in 1970 started as a light hearted job application with what seemed very little chance of success.
When I stepped off a plane in Lusaka, Zambia, in brilliant sunshine with a three year contract in my pocket I had little knowledge of the country and what challenges I had to face at Nkumba.
The sun is ever present in Zambia with sunsets that are breathtaking, swathes of colour as the sun sinks towards the horizon; then dark shadows followed by the stillness of the night. Sometimes the throb of drums will carry on the night air telling of some celebration deep in the bush. The drums seem to speak of an ancient culture unchanged by the passing years; but there is much beneath the surface; there is much to tell.
